Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. They create a pool of entrepreneurial experimentation from which successful firms emerge.
According to the Census Bureau 2009 County Business Patterns there were 4,428 businesses in Shasta County, 54% have under 5 employees, 98% under 100 employees.
Small business owners often start their businesses to create employment, to be their own boss, and to capitalize on an opportunity. Other research suggests that small business owners often wish to stay within a rural community and want to create a lifestyle that is more important than business profits and growth. For some, success may be defined at a basic level and business owners’ major goal is to make do, instead of making it big.
Small Business California, a proactive, non-partisan business advocacy organization whose only agenda is the well being of California small businesses, completed its 2011 annual survey with over 1400 responses from small businesses around the state. This survey had responses from every county in the state. The survey is used to set Small Business California’s agenda and received media coverage around the state. The survey was delivered to every legislator in the state and the governor.
