If you want to do business within the city limits of Redding, Anderson, or Shasta Lake, you will require a Business License. Whether you conduct business in the city, or have a business that is based in the city, a business license is required. A business license is NOT required, however, if your business is based within the unincorporated areas of Shasta County.
Business license application for Cities in Shasta County
The links above will take you to the application forms for a business license in each city.
However, filling out the application is only step 1. Once you’ve done that, you will also need to:
- Mail the application to the city clerk of the relevant city, along with a license fee. This fee will vary depending on which city you are operating in, and what kind of business you operate.
- Wait until the application is processed. Depending on the size and complexity of your business, this could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Your business license will be mailed to you when processing is complete.
- Display the business license clearly in your office (or other place of business).
All in all, this is not a difficult process, but it’s very important to do it. Fines for operating without a business license can cost many thousands of dollars, whereas a business license can usually be had for less than 100 dollars. Quite a bit less for small businesses, in fact.
Other rules and facts of note
If you want to run a business out of your home in the city of Redding, you will require a “home occupation affidavit.” This does not require an extra fee. Simply read and sign this form, and include it with your business license application.
In Redding, the city of Redding issues a weekly report on new business licenses issued during the previous week. In Anderson and Shasta Lake as well, a list of business licenses in the city is available publicly. This serves as a protection for consumers against fraudulent businesses.
