Attend Shasta Community College
We are lucky to have a fantastic two-year community college right here in Redding. In addition to transfer and pre-transfer level academic classes, this college has a famously robust music program, supported by musicians all across the area. Shasta College’s community band is one of the largest in the United States.
Shasta College offers a number of vocational programs including welding, nursing, horticulture, culinary arts and many more. These vocational programs may be some of the most useful and interesting opportunities for adults looking to change careers or launch new careers.
CSU Chico
Shasta Community College is a subsidiary of CSU Chico, which is located just an hour or so south of Redding. Many individuals in Redding actually commute to Chico for classes several times a week to attend this university.
As a CSU, this school has a very large offering of courses and degrees. Though it does not offer doctoral degrees, it does offer many types of bachelors and masters degrees, in addition to teaching credentials.
CSU Chico has a long history of distinguished public service. It has set records for volunteer fundraising, and has won several awards for service, including:
- The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
- An award for raising the most money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital
- The grand prize in the National Wildlife Federation’s Ecology Chill Out Contest (for fighting global warming).

Simpson University
A fast-growing private university, Simpson Universitycollege is an excellent WASC accredited liberal arts university offering twenty-three different bachelor’s degrees. Though it began life as a biblical college, named in honor of Albert Benjamin Simpson, the founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. But since the middle of the 20th century, this college had offered professional as well as religious education.
Simpson University has a 92-acre campus and is located in Redding.
Attend the Institute of Technology (Redding Location)
Also known as the Institute of Technology (California/Oregon) and formerly known as the Fresno Institute of Technology. The location in Redding is aimed at vocational training for adults, including business, criminal justice, medical, technical, and culinary certifications.
